Lukas Ligeti
Project and Bands

Classical Compositions
LL has composed for a wide variety of ensembles of classically-trained musicians interested or specializing in contemporary music; works range from solo pieces through various chamber ensembles to orchestral compositions and have been interpreted by many of the world's top ensembles. A CD of LL's chamber works has just been released by Tzadik records.

Solo Electronic Percussion
Solo music by LL, performing on electronic percussion. A DrumKat percussion controller and a sampler form the nucleus of LL's setup, and the pieces feature both composed and improvised elements. Many of the sounds used are based on sonic snapshots LL made during his numerous travels.

Mai Lingani & Lukas Ligeti
A collaboration between LL and acclaimed singer Maï Lingani from Burkina Faso, this group features cutting-edge urban African pop music originals, influenced by traditional music from Burkina Faso and other countries and regions of Africa. The MC "Entrons dans la danse" was released in Burkina Faso in 2000.

Burkina Electric
This brand-new project is a unique meeting of electronic dance music and African traditions, featuring rhythms from Burkina Faso, and new rhythms devised with that influence, instead of electronica's usual funk/disco grooves. Featuring LL, Maï Lingani, Burkina Faso's top guitarist Wende K. Blass, German pop music pioneer Pyrolator Kurt Dahlke, Austrian electronic composer Rupert Huber of the duo Tosca, and dancers As (of Côte d'Ivoire) and Levy (of Burkina Faso).

Raoul Björkenheim/Lukas Ligeti Duo
Free-improvised music drawing on a vast array of influences: jazz, new music, world music. Raoul Björkenheim was Finland's number one jazz guitarist before moving to New York; he has played with Edward Vesala, the Scorch Trio, Bill Laswell, and his own group, Krakatau. The CD "Shadowglow" by RB and LL was released by TUM Records in late 2003.

Gebbia/Ligeti/Pupillo
Improvising trio featuring LL with two great musicians from Italy, bassist Massimo Pupillo of the group Zu and saxophone virtuoso Gianni Gebbia. A CD release is planned for fall 2004 on Wallace Records.

Ilgenfritz/Ligeti/Maoz
A new trio, playing original music somewhere between avant jazz and jam band rock, featuring American bassist James Ilgenfritz and Israeli guitarist Eyal Maoz along with LL.

Fish Love That
LL recently joined this sextet consisting of top NYC musicians bridging the classical/jazz/experimental divide. The group features Neil Rolnick (keyboards/computer), Rob Henke (trumpet), Todd Reynolds (violin/computer), Steve Rust (bass), and Andrew Sterman (flute/reeds) and has a CD out on Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening label.

The Color Now
Led by guitarist Ty Cumbie, this is a free-improvising group, currently a quartet featuring TY Cumbie, Daniel Carter (wind instruments), Adam Lane (bass), and LL (drums), along with occasional special guests. Offshoots include the Ty Cumbie Quintet, playing jazz standards and originals, ans City Tunnel #3, a guitar/bass/drums trio.

A Pattern Language
The working title of this group is taken from an architectural "manifesto" by Christopher Alexander. This project unites improvising musicians with original approaches to polymetric improvisation. The group debuted in 1999 at the Wiener Musikgalerie Festival in Vienna, Austria, and has a yet-unreleased album. Features Benoît Delbecq (piano), Gianni Gebbia (saxophone), Aly Keïta (balafon), Michael Manring (electric bass), and LL (drums/toy balafon).

Beta Foly
Founded in 1994 as a result of an invitation by the Goethe Institute in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, this group explores the combination of African traditional music, Occidental experimentalism, and music technology. After numerous performances and tour in the late 1990s and a CD release of Intuition Music, this project is currently on an extended hiatus.

Ad Hoc Improvised Groupings
LL often plays free-improvised concerts with a wide variety of musicians and one-off groups. Guitarist Henry Kaiser is a frequent collaborator; other musicians LL has recently played with include Paolo Angeli, Robert Dick, Vladimir Volkov, Ned Rothenberg, Catherine Jauniaux, Jim O'Rourke, Michael Fischer, John Oswald, and many others.

Freezone
A no-frills, no-budget concert series for creative / improvised / experimental music, curated by Ty Cumbie and LL, started in August 2003. The mission of Freezone is to provide musicians a venue to perform with no commerical pressure of any kind. For current schedule and booking information, see http://www.freezoneny.org
